Sarcasm is SO AWESOME.

As in, it’s not. In truth, I am a sarcasm connoisseur. I love a good sarcastic quip. With rare exceptions, though, I nix the sarcasm while deep in the learning. The act of learning requires high vulnerability on the students’ part. They are opening themselves up to possible embarrassment, or even worse, to outright failure. That mode of entrenched learning has no room for potentially misconstrued jokes. Stick to being pleasant. Funny is good, energetic is good, informality is good. But leave it there. Any remark that runs even the smallest risk of offending your student is one to stay away from.

Note that I’m referring only to sarcasm as it applies to the learning exchange, not within normal communication parameters. If you and your student are sitting near a window and a fire truck siren blares outside for example, then it’s ok to say with sarcastically dry panache, “That siren needs to be louder.” Humor breaks the ice, and sarcasm is one arm of humor. With regard to the learning at hand, though, remain literal. Your student needs you to be.
